Learn to stand up paddleboard. We are now offering standup paddleboard lessons and hire, email or phone for details. In case you hadn't heard standup paddleboarding is the latest (and one of the oldest) things to hit surfing. Essentially it's a long extra bouyant board which you stand on using a paddle to propel it. Great fun and fantastic for flat days and catching waves super far out past all the paddleless fools.

The Surf Instructors
Steve, our surf lessons tutor has over 25yrs of surfing experience, he's patient & friendly & can answer all your surf questions. He's also completed the BSA ( British Surfing Association ) surf coach course which means he must have a current beach lifeguard certificate & at least 2 years surfing experience. We believe a surf coach should be able to surf well in order to teach others so we are very proud & confident of Steve's abilities. Here's Steve at a local break, with a bit of practice it could be you! |

Steve 'Crabby' Crawford
We have Steve "Crabby" Crawford who spent his first 8 years surfing in Cornwall and the next 20 years surfing right here in Scarborough. With 28 years of surfing experience you couldn't be in better hands. Steve has honed his skill on a range of boards from 5' fish twin fins to 10'+ planks including paddle boards but is probably better known for his fluid yet radical abilities on shortboards.

Mark 'Grommit' Dickinson
Mark 'Grommit' Dickinson was born in Scarborough and started surfing in Scarborough age 11. 21 years later he still out on every swell, as well as shaping boards locally. He offers advice on surf prediction, the art of nose-riding and glide, and making the most out of east coast surf conditions, although better known for his abilities on longboards, fishes and eggs. | We also have a female instructor available on request |
The surf lessons we offer at the surfing school are all 2hrs long. We ask you to arrive about 15 mins before your lesson starts so you have time to change and pick up your equipment . After the lesson we like to set aside some time for a chat and feedback on the surf lesson or on any surf related subject you like. We have changing facilities at the shop and a nice hot kettle for the essential post surf cuppa. Over to Steve now & here's a breakdown of the surfing lessons we offer:
|
Beginner surf lesson. This lesson is aimed at 1st timers. We'll teach you basic water and beach safety, how to carry and use your surfboard safely, paddling your board and catching a wave, a good warm up routine and of course how to stand on your board.
Beginner surf lesson stage 2. This is for folks who have been in a few times and are ready for a new challenge. We take you a little further out ( it's ok we don't go as far as Norway!) and learn to catch smaller re-form waves . This is the next step on from white water waves. These waves give you much more initial speed so (believe it or not) make it easier ,with a little practice, to stand up.
Beginner surf lesson stage 3. This is where the fun really starts! The lesson is aimed at your move from the white water to catching unbroken waves. Here you're taught the basics of judging wave speed and steepness then positioning yourself in the ideal spot to catch the wave. This is the last stage before intermediate and all those cool manouvers of wave glidey fun.
Intermediate surf lesson. From here on in these lessons are for people who can happily ride unbroken waves but are having problems with an aspect of their surfing. We can help you on the finer points of 'duck diving' or choosing the right wave to catch, simply tell us what you want to learn and we'll try our best to help. All intermediate surf lessons are taught on a 1 on 1 basis (unless a couple of friends want a lesson together)
There's something fishy going on! Wondering what all this kerfuffle is about with the modern fish boards? Then come and find out. This is an intermediate lesson which will take you through the finer points of riding a twin fin fish board and show you the advantages (and pit falls) of riding these boards. Price same as an intermediate lesson.
1 on 1 surf lesson. Any of the beginner surf lessons can be taught on a 1 instructor per person basis. This is perfect if you feel like you'd rather try surfing by yourself rather than in a group. Also It can help you to advance that little bit quicker with someone with you all the time for that extra confidence.
Mini courses. The Surf school also offer advice on all other aspects of surfing from surfboard repair to wave forecasting to competition theory. If you let us know what interests you we'll let you know when spaces are available
Surfing is a fantastic sport and with a bit of persistance quite easy to learn. All you need is a reasonably good sense of balance and be able to swim 50 metres in a pool.
